Short answer

Use Product Hunt when a concentrated launch event and broad software discovery are useful. Use Reddit when you can identify a community with strong audience fit and contribute in a format its rules allow. Reddit is not one channel: each subreddit has its own promotion policy, so the right comparison is Product Hunt versus a specific set of relevant communities.

At a glance

Event vs community

The channels create different attention.

Different content formats

One launch message should not serve both.

Use both with separate jobs

Sequence them instead of duplicating them.

The useful comparison is event vs community fit

Product Hunt is one launch surface. Reddit is a network of communities with different rules. Kivolet currently tracks 119 verified Reddit surfaces separately, so treating “Reddit” as a single promotional channel hides the most important decision: which community actually allows the post you want to make?

Product Hunt

One concentrated launch surface

Best when the launch event itself is useful: a new product, a broad software audience and a single canonical launch page.

Reddit

Many rule-bound communities

Best when a specific community has strong audience fit and the post can be useful on its own instead of functioning as a bare ad.

The distribution constraint is visible in the data: only a subset of tracked communities are open to direct promotion. Conditional and thread-only access require a different launch plan from an open surface.

When using both makes sense

Use Product Hunt as the launch event, then use relevant Reddit communities for problem-specific discussion, feedback or lessons learned where the rules permit it. Do not copy the Product Hunt pitch into every subreddit. The channel format and community norm should change the post.

Choose Product Hunt or Reddit based on the kind of attention you need

Product Hunt creates a recognizable launch event. Reddit creates many possible conversations, each inside a different community. That difference should drive the decision. If you need one public release page and a broad software-discovery audience, Product Hunt has the clearer format. If you need feedback from a specific profession, technology or problem community, a relevant subreddit can be the stronger channel.

Kivolet currently tracks 119 verified Reddit surfaces, and only 4 are classified as open to direct promotion. That is why “we will also post on Reddit” is not a plan. You need to name the communities and verify the allowed format.

Preparation is different on each channel

Product Hunt preparation

Prepare the product page, tagline, gallery, pricing context, maker profile and first comment. Product Hunt’s official posting guide lists those assets and recommends makers post their own products. Because the launch is concentrated, the landing page and visual story should be ready before the launch starts.

Reddit preparation

Preparation happens at the community level: read rules, inspect recent discussions, choose a post format and write for that audience. A polished gallery matters less than whether the contribution feels native to the subreddit. The work is more fragmented but can produce better audience specificity.

The same launch copy should not be used on both

On Product Hunt, the product itself is expected to be the center of the page. On Reddit, the community topic should usually be the center of the post. A Product Hunt tagline can be concise and product-forward; a Reddit post often needs more context, learning or discussion value before the product link makes sense.

This is why cross-posting the Product Hunt launch text into a subreddit is usually weak even when promotion is technically allowed. Adapt the angle: founder story for one community, technical tradeoff for another, direct showcase only where the community explicitly welcomes it.

Attention lifecycle: one event versus many smaller windows

Product Hunt is organized around a launch-day cycle. The product page can remain useful later, but the launch event is intentionally time-bound. Reddit posts are also time-sensitive in feeds, yet multiple communities can create several smaller windows of attention over days or weeks. That makes sequencing important.

For most SaaS products, using both works better when Product Hunt is the public release anchor and Reddit posts are spread around it according to community relevance. Do not publish every subreddit post at the exact moment the Product Hunt page goes live. You lose the opportunity to learn and adapt between discussions.

A combined Product Hunt + Reddit playbook

One week before

Finalize the Product Hunt assets. Separately shortlist the Reddit communities, verify current rules and draft native post angles. Do not ask communities for coordinated Product Hunt upvotes; Product Hunt’s official guidance warns against coordinated voting and incentive-based promotion.

Launch day

Publish Product Hunt and be available for comments. If one Reddit community clearly allows a launch/showcase format, publish there with a community-specific post. Otherwise wait: a rushed cross-post is not necessary just because another channel is live.

Days 2–7

Use what you learned from launch questions to improve the next Reddit posts. A repeated Product Hunt objection can become a useful community discussion. Share results or technical lessons where relevant, and keep the Product Hunt page as a canonical launch reference rather than the only destination for every conversation.

Example: launching a developer SaaS on both channels

Imagine a database client for developers. On Product Hunt, the launch page can lead with the product: what databases it supports, why the workflow is faster, screenshots of the interface and the maker’s first comment. The audience is already browsing products, so the product itself is a valid center of gravity.

On a database-focused subreddit, the stronger post may be completely different: a breakdown of the workflow problem that led to the product, an engineering decision around connection handling, or a question about how developers manage the same task today. The product can be shown openly when rules allow it, but the post should earn attention through relevance to that community rather than by importing Product Hunt copy.

The outcomes differ too. Product Hunt may be judged by the quality of the launch spike, new users and public product-page engagement. The subreddit may be judged by technical feedback, qualified referral traffic and the number of conversations with developers who actually experience the problem. Calling one channel the winner without preserving those distinct goals would erase the reason for using both.

Compare the channels with different success metrics

Product Hunt is easier to evaluate as a launch event: visits, signups, comments, launch-page engagement and downstream conversion. Reddit needs a community-level view: qualified comments, referral visits by subreddit, signups, feedback quality and whether the thread continues to surface in search or community discovery.

Do not force both channels into a single vanity metric such as views. The point of using different channels is that they create different forms of distribution. The best channel is the one that achieved the objective you assigned to it at acceptable cost and effort.

When you should choose only one

Choose Product Hunt alone when the product is broadly understandable, launch-day focus matters and you do not yet have a genuinely relevant Reddit community or post angle. Forcing a Reddit launch just to check a box creates unnecessary moderation risk and usually produces low-quality discussion.

Choose Reddit alone when the product serves a narrow audience whose communities are clearly identifiable and a broad launch platform adds little to the objective. This is common for specialized technical tools, niche professional workflows and products whose value needs more context than a launch card can communicate.

Use both when the channels have different jobs and you have the capacity to participate properly. Distribution gets weaker, not stronger, when a founder spreads the same message across more surfaces than they can genuinely support.
